River Basin Management Plan 2022 – 2027

Ireland’s third River Basin Management Plan is due to be published in December 2021. River Basin Management Plans (RBMPs) are key tools for implementation of the EU Water Framework Directive (WFD), key European legislation which requires our rivers, lakes, groundwater and coastal water to achieve a healthy state, or what’s known as ‘good ecological status’, by 2021. Ireland’s first River Basin Management Plan (RBMP) was published in 2009, the second in 2018, and the third RBMP is due to be published by the end of 2021 and will run for six years to 2027.

Significant Water Management Issues (SWMI) consultation

Before drafting the third RBMP, the Department of Housing, Planning and Local Government must identify key pressures or ‘significant water management issues’ currently impacting water bodies in Ireland. As part of this process they are holding a public consultation to gather views on what are considered to be the significant water management issues for Ireland which should be addressed in the next RBMP. The consultation will run from December 20, 2019 to August 7, 2020. Further details of the consultation can be found here.

Online workshop: Significant Water Management Issues (SWMI) consultation – an environmental perspective

The Sustainable Water Network (SWAN) and the Irish Environmental Network (IEN) hosted an online workshop to explore the SWMI consultation from an environmental perspective. Workshop recording and presentations are available here.
