Here is the SWAN response to the Public Consultation on the Irish Water Water Supply Project – Eastern and Midlands Region: Water Supply Options Working Paper, to give it its full title.

In SWAN stressed the two aspects of the Water Framework Directive that are inadequately dealt with in the consultation draft: The legal requirement to ensure that the ecological status, of the Shannon system, as required by the WFD, is not compromised or caused to deteriorate and that there needs to be much more ambitious measures to ‘promote an efficient and sustainable water use’ (WFD, Art. 11) in the Eastern and Midlands regions before the needs assumptions of the paper can be deemed to be sound.
